"Songs of the Vagabond Cello" - From Bach to Bossa and from Balkan Rhythms to Rhumba
Internationally acclaimed cellist, multilingual vocalist, and composer Ian Maksin, accompanied by the ZARIA Band, comes to The Mendel Center at Lake Michigan College as part of the Hanson Theatre Living Room Series on Friday, November 9, at 7 pm. The performance is part of his 2018 international tour that has spanned nearly 30 countries from Mexico to Canada to the Far East of Russia with more than 100 concerts.
During his Hanson Theatre performance, Maksin will perform music by J.S. Bach, Astor Piazzolla, as well as his own original compositions combining elements of classical, jazz, and ethnic music. He will be joined by the ZARIA band to share some of his latest repertoire additions that include original music infused with flavors of Russian, Balkan, Middle Eastern and Latin-American music, his renditions of folk music in many languages including Russian, Ukrainian, Armenian, Latvian, French, Italian, Portuguese, and Turkish, as well as Latin jazz and bossa favorites from Chick Corea, Tom Jobim, and more.
Maksin has gained international recognition for his beautiful tone, innovative style of playing the instrument, and for taking the cello well outside its conventional role. Although still very active as a classical artist, Maksin’s focus has shifted toward the blending of musical styles including jazz, blues, rock, and world music, using the cello as the common denominator.
He can often be heard and seen in collaborative projects with artists from different regions of the globe - Palestine, Israel, Morocco, Cuba, Serbia, Iran, Pakistan, India, Spain, Mexico, Japan - just to name a few. As a guest artist, he has performed and recorded with such artists as Andrea Bocelli, P. Diddy, Snoop Dogg, Gloria Estefan, and Barry Gibb. He has also opened performances for Sting and his guitarist Dominic Miller.
Tickets for Ian Maksin and the ZARIA Band are $15 and available at www.TheMendelCenter.com, through The Mendel Center box office at (269) 927-8700, option 1, and in person weekdays from 10 am to 6 pm at the box office located in The Mendel Center, 2755 E.
